The first step

The vertigo of starting

“Heading outdoors in company encourages us to move, increases commitment, and allows us to enjoy sharing the experience.”

Sometimes we feel the urge to live an adventure, something new, an experience that takes us out of the house and into nature. Something catches our eye, sparks our curiosity, and stimulates us. We can imagine what it would be like to be somewhere high with a view, and it brings a wide smile to our faces. Yet often, immediately after, negative thoughts about the idea creep in. “I’m not ready, I don’t have the gear, that route isn’t for me, I’ll get lost.” Sound familiar?

It’s normal. Fear is necessary; it protects us from harm and keeps us away from what we perceive as dangerous. The point is to find a balance between our desire for adventure and our concerns. For me, the key lies in listening to what we tell ourselves about our physical abilities and adapting the activity accordingly, stepping just a little bit out of our comfort zone.

The essential thing is to take the first step and leave the house. It might be enough to pump up the tyres of that bike you haven't touched in a while and go for a targetless ride through the city. Or heading to the woods on a Saturday morning to walk for half an hour and sit down with a book you enjoy. Doing it in company also helps. It encourages us to move, increases commitment, and we enjoy sharing the experience.
